Restoration
A clean can do wonders for a painting, a varnish can bring out colours you never knew were there.

Two painting in need of some TLC
If your picture needs a hole mending, a scratch fixed or even a whole canvas lining due to really bad damage, Inglenook Fine Arts can help. We know that some restorers can charge extremely high prices, and this can be a barrier to buying tired paintings in need of some TLC, but it need not be. Before you think of consigning your disaster to a skip, contact us. Our chief restorer Jill Bagshaw, who recently featured as resident expert on two television programmes made for 'The Antiques Challenge' show demonstrating painting and frame restoration, will be happy to discuss with you and advise the best treatment for your picture.
Services we offer include cleaning, lining and re-lining damaged or torn canvases, making good paint loss, varnish stripping of old discoloured varnish from paintings on canvas or panels from ancient to modern. We also treat works on paper (foxing, tears etc.). We also offer frame restoration as seen below in these before and after photos.

Paintings can have mixed fortunes or should we say misfortunes, and just some we have saved include a large canvas which during the course of home improvements, was damaged by the family pet, in this case an Old English Sheepdog ran through it. Another painting fell off the wall onto a silver tea service in the middle of the night (remember to check your picture cord!), and one which was damaged by water on the way to an antiques roadshow. Some are fire damaged or just accidentally damaged while moving house, or having the builders in.
As you can see from the picture above, it needed some attention, most people would have binned it, doubting that it could ever be restored - not with our restorer!

Quite a transformation eh!

The cleaning process began, it's like washing a grubby window and seeing light come in. Where there was dark brown murky skin there suddenly appeared a delicate complexion, colours really did appear.
We have never ceased to be amazed as to what a clean can reveal in a painting. People, animals, even signatures (not every time sadly but there is always hope!). It is fascinating to see this portrait in half stages, one half clean the other filthy.
So should you wish for a restoration quote on your picture please just ask.
We think you will be pleasantly surprised. Just email or phone with a few details, like size, age, type of damage etc. and we are sure we can help.
