Until recently the inks used were exclusively dye based, and had a limited life (especially when exposed to light). With the advent of pigment based inks, the inkjet printer has now become suitable for Fine Art work.

In conjunction with the latest large format printers that will print in six or more colours, and a variety of art and watercolour papers and even canvas, incredibly highly detailed reproductions (called Giclée prints) can be produced economically from any two dimensional media (oils, watercolours, acrylics, pastels, pencil, mixed media, photographs etc.)
